If you are shooting architecture in Chicago next month, you need serious corner-to-corner bite for those big prints. I am totally blown away by the newer Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art! Its a completely different beast than the older DSLR versions or even the bulky f1.2... way sharper in the edges for the S1R sensor. If 35mm is kinda tight for those skyscrapers, these are fantastic alternatives:

Sigma 24mm f1.4 DG DN Art - basically zero distortion for straight lines.

Sigma 20mm f1.4 DG DN Art - incredible for tight interiors. The DG DN line was built specifically for high-res mirrorless sensors like yours. You get basically all the Leica performance for a fraction of the cost.
then i saw the Samyang 12mm f2 which is super cheap but i keep hearing it's manual focus only... or is there an AF version now? my logic was that wider is better for the mountains but i dont want to carry a brick. is there a hidden gem i missed or something...?

To add to the point above: everyone is spot on about that sensor being a total beast. In my experience, the biggest mistake people make is thinking any E-mount lens will just work fine because it fits the mount. While they technically click in, many budget wide-angles have massive field curvature that becomes a total nightmare on the A7R V. Youll focus the center, but the edges will look like absolute mush even if you stop down to f/8 or f/11. I've tried many cheap glass options over the years and honestly, some of the entry-level stuff has pretty poor weather sealing too. Since youre heading to Oregon, you really gotta watch out for mist and moisture if you go too cheap. That high-res sensor wont just show softness, it'll highlight every bit of sensor dust and internal lens flare that better coatings usually handle. Just be careful with anything too dated or youll end up with 61 megapixels of regret once you actually see the raw files on a big screen... just my two cents after making that mistake myself a few times.

I have been following the RF lens lineup closely and its truly fantastic how much performance we get for the price now, you are gonna love it! Regarding your concerns about the autofocus reliability for a wedding, I highly recommend checking out some of the benchmarking tools on sites like The Digital Picture or the reviews by Dustin Abbott. They provide an amazing level of methodical detail on motor speed and low-light hunting that is really hard to find elsewhere... it is way more reliable than just relying on random opinions and it will show you exactly how it performs on the Canon EOS R8 sensor. I do have a question about the wedding logistics tho... how much room will you actually have to move around at the reception? If the venue is gonna be super cramped, a longer focal length might be tricky to use no matter how good the autofocus is, so that is definitely worth considering before you decide.

Over the years, I've tried many lenses, but I learned that corner consistency is what actually matters for big prints.

What is the absolute sharpest prime lens I can get for my L-mount setup right now? Im shooting on a Lumix S1R so I really need something that can actually resolve all those megapixels for some commercial architectural stuff I have coming up here in Chicago next month.

Ive spent the last three nights reading reviews and looking at MTF charts and Im honestly more confused than when I started lol. Most people point to the Leica 50mm APO-Summicron-SL as the king of sharpness but that price tag is just insane and I am trying to figure out if its actually worth the jump over something like the Sigma 35mm f1.2 or the newer 50mm f1.4 DG DN Art. I read on one forum that the Sigma 35mm is actually sharper in the center than the Leica but then another guy said the corner falloff on the Sigma makes it useless for architecture if you arent stopping way down and honestly I dont want to buy a lens that only works at f8 because I need that low light capability too.

My budget is around $2500 max but I could maybe go a bit higher if it is gonna be a forever lens for me. I really need edge to edge clarity because I am doing large format prints. Im mostly looking at these right now:

Leica 50mm APO Summicron

Sigma 35mm f1.2 Art

Lumix S Pro 50mm f1.4

Is there a sleeper lens Im missing or is the Leica really that much better than the Panasonic Pro glass? I just want to make sure I am not overpaying for the red dot if the Sigma or Lumix glass is 95% of the way there...
