I bought an S5II last week for my sisters wedding in Seattle next month but all my test shots look like they came from my phone and I am so frustrated right now. I spent most of my money on the camera and only have about 500 bucks left for a lens that can actually make people look good with those blurry backgrounds.

The kit lens just isnt doing it and I keep seeing all these numbers like 50mm and 85mm and my head is just spinning. Which Panasonic Lumix S lens is actually the best value for portraits if I dont want to spend a fortune?

So I finally pulled the trigger on a used D850 after shooting with a D7200 for forever and honestly the difference is insane but now my old lenses just aren't cutting it. I’ve got a couple of graduation shoots coming up at the local park in about three weeks and I really want that creamy bokeh look for the seniors but I am totally stuck on which prime to go for.

I've been looking at the Nikon 85mm f/1.4G and the Sigma 85mm Art. I found a deal on the Nikon for like $900 used but everyone says the Sigma is way sharper even if it is a literal brick to carry around all day. Then there is the 105mm f/1.4E which people rave about but it might be way over my budget of $1300 unless I find a crazy deal. I’m mostly worried about the autofocus speed because the seniors move around a lot more than you'd think lol.

Is the Sigma Art worth the extra weight on an already heavy D850 or should I just stick with the native Nikon glass? Or is the 105mm just so much better that I should sell a kidney to get it...

I have been obsessing over the X-T5 for months and I am so hyped to finally make the jump but man the price is still sitting so high everywhere I look. I have been checking B&H and Adorama daily but the EDU discounts for Fuji seem totally non-existent for this specific model right now which is super frustrating because I am a full-time student and every dollar counts when you are living on ramen lol.

Here is what I am working with:

Budget: around 1800 max for body and maybe a small prime

Location: I am based in the US

Timeline: really need to have it in my hands before my study abroad trip in three weeks

Use case: mostly street photography and some light video for my journalism classes

Has anyone found a way to get a student discount on this thing lately or does Fuji just not do that for their newer bodies? I have heard people mention SheerID but nothing is popping up for the T5 specifically and I am starting to panic a little bit that I will have to pay full retail...

I have been shooting professionally for years but I just made the jump to mirrorless and the weight/balance on this body is throwing me off. I have a destination shoot in the UK starting in ten days and my old EF 24-70 with the adapter feels way too front-heavy for 10-hour days.

I need one native RF lens that can do it all. Budget is around $2,300. Is the RF 24-105mm f/4L sharp enough for the 45MP sensor or am I gonna regret not having that f/2.8 speed for indoor shots? I dont want to carry a bag of primes...

I finally saved up enough for a Sony a6400 and I am so excited to actually start taking real photos instead of just using my phone all the time. The camera came with this little zoom lens but honestly it feels a bit basic and I keep seeing people talk about prime lenses and how they make the background all blurry and pretty. I think they call it bokeh? anyway i have no idea what number to look for. like is 35mm better or 50mm?

I want to take a lot of photos of my cat and also I'm going on a trip to Japan next month so I want something that looks professional but isnt too heavy to carry around all day. I have about 450 dollars left in my budget which I hope is enough because lenses are way more expensive than I thought they would be lol. Everything is just so confusing with all the different brands like Sigma and Sony and I dont know if I need to stick to the same brand as the camera.

Sorry if this is a super basic question i just dont want to buy the wrong thing and regret it since I'm a total beginner. Which prime lens is the best one to start with for a newbie?

So I finally made the jump from the GH5 to the S5II and honestly the PDAF is making me so hyped to shoot more stills. Im actually booking my first real portrait gig for a wedding out here in Seattle this October and I need to nail the glass choice. I used to be all about the MFT stuff but the full frame depth is a whole different beast and im still getting used to the compression. I was looking at the Lumix 85mm f1.8 because its light and honestly the price is a steal right now but then I saw the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art and I cant stop thinking about that bokeh. My budget is roughly $1000 so I could go either way but I am slightly worried about the weight of the Sigma for a long day of shooting. Does the 1.4 really make that much of a difference on the S5II sensor or is the native Lumix 85mm sharp enough for professional work? I really want that subject separation to pop since the background is gonna be some rainy garden vibe. Would you go for the native f1.8 primes or is the Sigma Art worth the extra cash and weight for someone just getting into the L-mount world? Or maybe I should look at a 50mm instead...

Ive been shooting street for about a decade now, mostly on old Fuji and Sony bodies, but I finally bit the bullet and switched over to the Panasonic S5II for that phase hybrid AF. I thought the transition would be seamless because I know my focal lengths like the back of my hand, but man, the L-mount lens lineup is actually kind of stressing me out more than I expected. I'm used to small, discrete primes, but when I look at the pro L-mount glass, everything seems absolutely massive or way out of my budget.

I'm heading to Chicago in about three weeks for a specific project focusing on high-contrast urban geometry and candid portraits. I have about $1,100 saved up for a single, do-it-all street prime. At first, I was looking at the Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art because, well, it's a classic, but then I saw the size of it in a shop and I'm worried it's gonna kill my wrist after eight hours of walking around the Loop. Plus, it's a bit look at me, which I hate when I'm trying to be invisible.

Then I looked at the Panasonic 35mm f1.8. It's lighter and cheaper, which is great, but does it have that soul or character? Some of these modern lenses feel almost too clinical, you know? I also keep seeing people rave about the Sigma 35mm f2 Contemporary I-series because of the all-metal build and the aperture ring, which I really miss from my old tactile cameras. But then I worry f2 might not be enough if I'm shooting late at night in the subway.

The unexpected part for me is how much the rendering varies between the Sigma and Panasonic stuff even though it's the same mount. I'm totally torn between going for the high-end Sigma Art, the lightweight Panasonic 1.8 series, or maybe even hunting for a used Leica... wait, no, the Summicron is way out of my bracket. What are you guys actually using day-to-day for street? Is the size of the Art lenses a dealbreaker for you, or is the image quality worth the extra weight? I really need something that balances being discrete with having enough wide-aperture pop...
