I just got a new camera, it's the Canon R10, because I want to take better pictures of my kids and my sister asked me to do some professional shots for her engagement next month. I have no idea what I'm doing honestly lol. The lens that came with the camera is okay but everything looks kind of flat? I want that blurry background look where the person is sharp but the trees behind them are all fuzzy and pretty.
Someone told me I need a prime lens but I don't even know what that means. Is that like a brand? I've been looking online and see all these numbers like 50mm or 85mm and f/1.8 and it's just a lot of math I wasnt expecting. I'm really sorry if this is a super basic question but I'm just so lost with the Canon mirrorless system.
My budget is probably around $400 or $500 max because I already spent a lot on the camera itself. We are doing the shoot at a park in Seattle so it might be a bit cloudy. Does that change what lens I should get? I just want something that makes people look good without me having to stand like a mile away. What do you think is the best one for a beginner who literally knows nothing?...
Welcome to the club! Honestly, you're gonna love the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for those engagement shots. It's the absolute best beginner lens and way under your budget! A prime just means it doesnt zoom, which helps get that blurry background you're after even on cloudy days. On your R10, it's fantastic for portraits without being stuck too far back. Its a total game changer!
