I just dropped a fortune on the R5 Mark II because I needed that crazy fast sensor for my wedding season here in Seattle but honestly I'm kind of hitting a wall. I've been shooting Canon for over a decade and I thought my old EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II would be totally fine with the adapter but man it feels... clunky? The autofocus on the new body is lightyears ahead but I feel like the lens motor is struggling to keep up with the eye tracking and the sharpness just isnt there when I'm cropping in on these big 45MP files. Plus the balance feels off with the adapter and it's driving me nuts during 10 hour days.
I've got a huge gallery due next month and I need to stop messing around with gear that doesnt work right. I have about $2600 saved up for one solid zoom but I cant decide between the obvious RF 24-70 or if I should go for that 24-105 f/4 or even wait for something else. A few things I need:
- total edge to edge sharpness
- fast enough AF to match the R5II speed
- decent weight for all day use
Is the 24-105 even sharp enough for this sensor or am I gonna regret losing the stop of light for ceremonies? What are you guys actually using as your main workhorse for this specific body that doesnt feel like a compromise?
Honestly, if youre doing weddings, dont even look at the f/4. Ive been super satisfied with the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM on my R5II and it is basically night and day compared to the old EF version. The biggest thing youre gonna notice is the dual Nano USM system. Unlike the old ring USM in your EF glass, these motors are specifically tuned for the high-speed data throughput of the R5II sensor. It just snaps to eyes instantly. Plus, that extra stop of light is non-negotiable for dark Seattle ceremonies when the weather is gloomy. I found the edge-to-edge resolution holds up way better on 45MP files too... no more mushy corners. It is perfectly balanced without that clunky adapter mess. It is the only zoom I am truly happy with as a professional workhorse.
