I'm looking at the 56mm f1.2 WR for a Seattle wedding next month, but I'm stuck. My logic was it's the best choice, but reviews say the AF is slow for the X-H2S.
People suggest the 50mm f1.0 instead but that's way over my $1100 budget... is the 56mm actually gonna hunt that much?
> is the 56mm actually gonna hunt that much? To add to the point above, I would be cautious. The 56mm uses a DC motor which is basically gonna be the bottleneck for your X-H2S tracking speed. Tbh, you might want to consider the Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR instead. It uses quad linear motors and the AF is way more reliable. Just make sure you have the room to back up since it's a tighter focal length.
Same setup here, love it
I actually had a really disappointing experience with that 56mm WR during a dark reception last year. Missing the main kiss because the lens was hunting... yeah, that was the worst. Honestly, the AF speed just isnt there for high-pressure stuff like weddings, especially in Seattle where the light is gonna be tricky. Since you're on a budget but need reliability, here's what I'd actually do:
- Look at the Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 XF Pro. I know its a third party lens but the focus is surprisingly snappy and it fits well within your budget.
- Check out the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. Its way cheaper and the AF is way more reliable for tracking movement than the Fuji 56mm. Check out the comparison videos on the Cameralab website or DPReview forums. They go deep into the AF speed issues with the X-H2S. Also, if you want to save even more, check sites like MPB for used gear... you could probably get both of those lenses for the price of one Fuji and still have cash left over for extra batteries.
I grabbed the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR for a shoot last month and it performed pretty well on my X-H2S, even if it felt a bit slower than my kit lenses. For a Seattle wedding, you really want that weather sealing and the low light capability since its probably gonna be overcast or dark inside. The autofocus isnt deal-breakingly slow, but it does hunt more than the linear motor lenses if the subject is moving fast toward you.
- Image quality: Sharpest thing I have ever used.
- Speed: Decent for portraits, tricky for kids running.
- Budget: Fits right under your $1100 limit. If you want something cheaper and faster, the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X is a solid backup, but it misses that weather sealing which youll probably need for the PNW. Stick with the Fuji 56mm WR, it works fine once you get used to its rhythm.
Honestly the 56mm WR is gonna hunt if the lights are low at the reception, so be careful relying on it for those split-second shots. Before you drop your budget on it, I would suggest asking yourself a couple things... do you absolutely need a native Fujifilm lens for the aperture ring and weather sealing, or would you consider a third-party brand if it had faster autofocus? Also, are you dead set on a prime lens or would you consider a fast zoom to cover more ground? TL;DR: The AF motor in the 56mm is the bottleneck for your body. Decide if you're open to other brands or lens types before committing.
