I have been shooting on the A7R IV for about three years now so I am used to that 61mp sensor showing every little flaw but I ran into a weird issue last week during a high-end jewelry shoot here in Seattle. I was using my 50mm f/1.2 GM which is usually my workhorse but even stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8 it just felt kinda soft in the corners which was super unexpected for a lens at that price point. I dont know if it is a copy variation thing or if I am just hitting the limits of the glass but I need something that is bitingly sharp from edge to edge for some studio work I have coming up in late October.

I am looking at the 135mm GM or maybe one of the Voigtlander APO lenses but I am worried about the manual focus speed for my workflow. My budget is around $2,000 so that opens up most of the G-Master line but I really just want the one with the highest resolving power possible to match this high res sensor. Is the 35mm GM actually better or should I be looking at the 50mm f/1.4 instead of the 1.2? I just need that clinical surgical look for these macro-style crops...

Ugh I am so over this kit lens honestly. I’ve been trying to get those nice blurry backgrounds for my portrait shots but everything just looks so flat and boring and my cousin's engagement shoot is in like two weeks so I’m lowkey panicking. I’ve been scouring the forums and watching hours of YouTube and everyone keeps saying the Sony 85mm f1.8 is the absolute best bang for your buck but then I see people swearing by the 55mm Zeiss because it’s more versatile for indoor stuff. My problem is I usually work in pretty tight spaces—like small living rooms or local cafes—and I’m terrified if I get the 85 I’m gonna be literally backing into walls just to get a headshot. But then if I go with a 35 or 50 will it even look like a professional portrait or just a snapshot? I only have about 600 or 700 bucks to spend and I can’t afford those crazy expensive G-Master lenses everyone talks about. I just need something that makes people look good without me needing a football field of space. Which one should I actually pull the trigger on before I lose my mind...

So I finally pulled the trigger on a Sony A7IV after saving up for like a year. Its a huge upgrade from my old crop sensor but now Im hitting the wall with lens choices. Ive got this trip to Tokyo and Kyoto coming up in about seven weeks and I really want to just bring one lens and leave it on the camera the whole time. Im not really the type who likes fumbling with lens caps and bags while Im trying to find a good ramen spot or walking through a crowded shrine.

Ive been doing a ton of reading online and honestly its just making me more indecisive. Everyone seems to swear by the Tamron 28-75mm G2 because its light and the price is right, but then I see people arguing that 28mm isnt wide enough for street stuff and I should go for the Sigma 24-70mm Art instead. My budget is pretty firm at around $1,100 so the Sony GM II is definitely out of the question even though it looks amazing.

I also saw some folks recommending the Sony 24-105mm f/4 because of the extra reach but Im worried about that f/4 aperture when it gets dark. Tokyo at night is half the reason Im going so I dont want to be stuck with grainy shots because the lens is too slow. But then if I get the 2.8 zoom, am I gonna miss that extra 30mm of zoom? Its like every time I think Ive picked one, I find a thread where someone says the other is better for all-around use.

Im mainly gonna be doing a mix of street photography, some landscape stuff in the parks, and probably a lot of food photos and portraits of my girlfriend. I just want something that balances weight and quality without making me regret not bringing a whole kit. Since this is my first full-frame, Im kinda paralyzed by the options. What do you guys actually find yourself keeping on your camera 90% of the time when you only have room for one?

I've finally saved up enough for a really solid setup but now I'm paralyzed by choice and my trip to Japan is literally three weeks away. I'm taking my Sony A7IV and I really want to just bring one lens that can handle everything from the neon streets of Shinjuku at night to the temples in Kyoto. I hate carrying a massive bag and swapping lenses every five minutes while my wife waits for me... it just kills the vibe of the trip and I end up missing the moment anyway.

Right now I'm stuck between three main options. The Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is obviously the dream lens but man that price tag is steep. Like $2300 is basically my entire food and rail pass budget for the trip. Then there is the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art which everyone says is like 95% as good for way less money but I've heard it's a bit of a brick weight-wise. My wrist already gets tired after a few hours of shooting and we are gonna be walking like 20k steps a day easy.

Lately I've also been looking at the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6. It seems like the ultimate travel lens because of that crazy reach but I'm worried about the f/5.6 at the long end when the sun starts going down. I do a lot of night street photography and I'm scared I'll regret not having a constant f/2.8. But then again, having 200mm for those compressed street shots or architectural details sounds incredible compared to being stuck at 70mm.

Budget is around $2000 max but honestly I'd rather stay closer to $1000 if I'm not sacrificing a ton of sharpness. I just want the best all-around lens that stays on the camera 90% of the time without making me regret leaving the others at home. If you had to pick one to live on your Alpha body for a month of heavy travel, which one would you actually trust... the expensive Sony, the heavy Sigma, or the versatile Tamron?
