I just pulled the trigger on the R5 Mark II and honestly my bank account is screaming at me but now im panicking about what glass to actually put on it. I dont want to spend all this money on a high res body just to get soft images because I picked the wrong do-it-all lens. I've been staring at reviews for the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L and the RF 24-105mm f/4L for like three days straight now. I read that the 24-105 is the better walkaround lens because of the extra reach but then other people on reddit say the f/4 is gonna be a total nightmare once the sun goes down or if im indoors.
I'm heading to Italy in three weeks for a cousins wedding and I want to spend the rest of the trip just wandering around Rome and Florence taking street shots. My budget is pretty much capped at $2300 since the camera body cost so much. Is the 24-70 worth the extra weight and cost if im mostly gonna be outside? Or is there some other lens I'm totally missing that balances the 45 megapixels better? I just dont want to regret this when I get home and see the shots on a big screen. What should I actually get for an all-purpose setup that wont break my back or my wallet any further?
Honestly i had issues with the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM indoors. Unfortunately f/4 just isnt as good as expected when the lights go down, especially for a wedding. It felt risky. You really want the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM to handle those 45 megapixels without turning everything into a grainy mess. Quick tip: stick to f/2.8 so you dont regret those low-light wedding shots later.
> Is the 24-70 worth the extra weight and cost if im mostly gonna be outside? Or is there some other lens I'm totally missing that balances the 45 megapixels better? Been thinking about your hardware choice. Technically, the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is the only lens in your budget that truly does justice to that 45MP sensor. I have been very satisfied with how it maintains sharpness across the entire frame. The 24-105mm is decent, but you'll notice the drop in quality at the edges when you're looking at those high-res files from Rome. Quick tip: the R5 Mark II has excellent IBIS, so you can shoot the 24-70mm at slow speeds if you need to. If you're worried about the wedding, that f/2.8 is basically mandatory for the lighting. Just grab a good strap like the Peak Design Slide Camera Strap to help with the weight. It works well for long days of walking. You wont regret the extra glass quality once you get home.
Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.
