My sisters wedding is literally in two weeks and she just asked me to handle some formal family portraits outdoors. I am freaking out because I only have the kit lens for my 90D right now and need something sharper fast. I was looking at the Canon 50mm f1.8 but then saw people recommending the 85mm f1.8 for better bokeh. My concern is the 90D is a crop sensor and I dont want to be standing a mile away just to get a headshot if we end up moving inside. Budget is $500 and I need to order by Monday so I can practice. Should I go with the 50mm or is the 85mm way too tight for this camera?

I once tried an 85mm at a small wedding and literally couldnt fit more than one person in the frame without hitting a wall. On your 90D, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is much more manageable indoors. If you're really worried about space, the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM is a rock solid alternative. It has image stabilization which is a lifesaver when you get nervous and shaky during formal shots.

In my experience, go with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. On your 90D, the 1.6x crop factor makes it an 80mm equivalent, which is the sweet spot for portraits.

  • The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM hits 136mm, which is way too long for family groups or indoor shots.
  • 50mm offers better versatility for formal wedding setups.
  • Stopped down to f/2.8, its incredibly sharp. Let me know if you need help with focus settings.
