honestly so fed up with my current setup right now. I just dropped a fortune on the r5 mark ii thinking it would solve everything but my old ef 24-70 is hunting for focus and the adapter feels clunky and loose and its driving me crazy during shoots. I have a huge wedding in seattle next saturday and i cannot deal with this gear failing me again.
I need something that just works for everything from portraits to wide shots without switching glass every five minutes. my budget is around 2500 because i already spent so much on the body. what is actually the best all-around lens for the canon eos r5 mark ii that wont let me down?
Man i feel your pain with that adapter setup. Its honestly a nightmare when you spend that much on a body like the R5 II just to have the lens wiggle or hunt for focus right when you need it. I had the same disappointment trying to adapt my older L glass since the connection felt so flimsy during vertical shots. The EF motors just arent snappy enough for the new dual pixel AF and unfortunately that clunky feeling with the adapter is pretty common once the mounts get a little wear on them. If you keep using that setup for a Seattle wedding, you are gonna be fighting the gear instead of capturing the moment. If you want one lens that stays on your camera for basically the whole day and wont let you down, you gotta grab the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM. Its usually around 2399 so its right in your budget. The autofocus is near-instant compared to the EF version and the internal communication is way faster. I tried to make the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM work to save some cash, but the f/4 aperture was really disappointing in low light reception venues. It just didnt deliver the bokeh I needed for those high-end portraits either. Methodically speaking, the 24-70 is the only logical choice here because it handles your wide group shots and then 70mm is plenty for those mid-range candids. You wont have to deal with the focus hunting anymore because the Nano USM motors are designed specifically for the R5 series tracking. Just get the native glass before that Seattle gig or youre gonna be stressing the whole time... its not worth the risk on a big job.
Regarding what #1 said about "Man i feel your pain with that adapter..."
- I totally agree. You should be really careful with adapted lenses on a high-stakes wedding day. I would suggest the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM because it is basically the safest native choice for that mount. Watch out for:
- lens firmware updates
- wrist fatigue from the weight
- battery drain... definitely grab a Canon LP-E6P Battery as a backup.
adding my two cents here... you really gotta be careful with that adapter at a high-stakes wedding. one tiny bump and you lose the connection mid-vows and thats a nightmare you dont want. im not 100% sure which way you should go yet tho because it depends on the venues. are these seattle ceremonies mostly indoors or are you dealing with outdoor light? iirc the focus speed on some of the heavier rf zooms can be a bit picky depending on the battery and heat settings in the r5 ii. i think you definitely want to stick to native glass for the weather sealing alone since it rains so much there, but make sure to think about if you actually need the f/2.8 or if f/4 would cut it. the r5 ii af is amazing but it only really sings when the lens can keep up. honestly dont risk the adapter again if you can help it.
