Tamron has put up its first official 16-50mm F2.8 A (Check price at Amazon/B&H Photo Video) sample photos. There are eight of them, shot on four APS-C bodies: the Canon EOS R10, Sony α6700, Nikon Z50II and Fujifilm X-H2. Tamron lists the focal length, aperture, shutter speed and ISO for each one on its sample photo page, and the images are available there at full size. The captions below use Tamron’s data.

Wide open at 16mm

Three of the eight frames were taken at 16mm and F2.8, the wide end at the widest aperture. The flower is the one to look at for close focus and background blur, though Tamron does not give the shooting distance. The two Fujifilm frames use Classic Chrome and Classic Neg. film simulations, so their color is not neutral.

What these show, and what they don’t

  • Tamron picked these and does not list how they were processed. Treat them as marketing samples rather than a test.
  • They span the range: city, food, portrait, architecture, close-up and mountains. The portrait and the food were both shot at F3.5, slightly stopped down from F2.8.
  • Only one frame is at 50mm and F2.8: the boat facade on the α6700, at 1/2000 s.
  • One frame per mount is not enough to compare the Canon, Sony, Nikon and Fuji versions with each other.

Independent samples

For shots that are not from Tamron, photographer Julia Trotti shot the Sony E version on an α6700 for a day of street photography and video, and said the images are sharp, with plenty of detail. Her photos are edited with her own presets, so look at the unedited side-by-sides she includes. See her review and samples. We covered the price and specs in our earlier post.
