Im losing my mind trying to pick a one-and-done lens for my new X-T5 before I head to Japan in three weeks. I spent way too much on the body already so my budget is capped at like $900 max. I read a ton of reviews saying the 18-55mm is a classic but then other people say it cant handle the 40mp sensor and looks soft??
Then there is the 16-80mm f4 which seems perfect for travel but half the forums say the image quality is garbage compared to the primes. I just want something that stays on the camera for street shots and some landscapes without me having to carry a bag of glass. Is there actually a zoom that doesnt waste the sensor or am I stuck carrying three primes around Tokyo?
Like someone mentioned, that 40mp sensor is quite demanding. Unfortunately, I had issues with the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR on my X-T5; the edge softness was disappointing for landscapes. It just wasnt as good as expected for a high-res body. Consider the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X instead. It is technically sharper, handles the resolution better, and is plenty light enough for Tokyo.
> I just want something that stays on the camera for street shots and some landscapes without me having to carry a bag of glass. Dude, you are gonna have such an amazing time in Japan! Honestly, dont stress the pixel peepers too much about that 40mp sensor stuff, but if you want the best bang for your buck, you absolutely need to check out the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. It is tiny, like seriously tiny, and way sharper than the old Fuji 18-55mm kit lens. I used it for a week straight on my X-T5 and the constant f2.8 is a lifesaver for those dark Tokyo alleys and neon street shots at night. It is well under your $900 cap too, which means more money for arcade games and ramen! Forget carrying a bunch of primes, this little zoom is fantastic and wont break your back.
Solid advice 👍
I have been shooting with the Fuji system for about seven years now and have moved through several body upgrades. The reality of that 40mp sensor in the X-T5 is that it definitely reveals flaws in older lens designs if you are pixel peeping, but for real-world travel, you still have some very strong options. Here is a methodical breakdown based on your $900 budget:
- Search for a used Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR. This is Fujis professional Red Badge zoom. Its the only one that truly maximizes the resolution of the X-T5 throughout the entire focal range. Since your camera has IBIS, the lack of lens stabilization isnt a dealbreaker. You can typically find a clean copy for $750 to $850.
- The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a formidable alternative. Its sharp enough for the high-res sensor and gives you more reach than the Fuji equivalent. Its weather-resistant and handles the humidity in Japan quite well.
- If you realize zooms are just too heavy for walking ten miles a day in Tokyo, the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR is a great companion. Its tiny, fast, and very sharp for street shots. I would suggest looking at the 16-55mm first. It is heavy, but it basically replaces three primes in your bag without sacrificing the quality that the X-T5 sensor is capable of delivering... worth the extra weight honestly.
Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
