I've been using my 90D for a while now but I’ve got a family portrait session coming up next month and I’m realizing my 18-135 kit lens is just too soft for this 32mp sensor. I need something that actually looks professional but I’m broke so I gotta keep it under $250 tops.
- needs to be sharp at low f-stops
- good bokeh (obviously)
- decent autofocus since im shooting kids too
I'm stuck between the 50mm 1.8 and maybe trying to find a used 85mm but worried about the crop factor making it too tight for indoor stuff. Which one works best for that high res sensor without breaking the bank?
> I'm stuck between the 50mm 1.8 and maybe trying to find a used 85mm Tbh, for that 32.5MP sensor, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is hard to beat for the price. Ive been really satisfied with how it handles the high resolution. The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is sharper and has faster AF for kids, but on an APS-C body, it feels like 136mm... way too tight for indoors. Stick with the 50mm, it works well for that resolution.
Agreeing with the space issue... I tried a long lens at my cousins party and it was a disaster because I had to stand in the hallway to fit everyone. Honestly, I was even let down by the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM focus speed with hyper kids.
- Look for a used Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art
- Try refurbished stores for deals Buying used is basically the only way to stay under budget imo.
Re: "> I'm stuck between the 50mm 1.8 and..."
- Saw this earlier and wanted to chime in because I'd be really careful about going too long if you're shooting indoors. I learned that the hard way at a family reunion. I brought a long prime thinking the bokeh would look amazing, but the living room was so small I literally had to stand in the hallway just to get a decent frame. It was a nightmare trying to direct people from another room. Also, watch your shutter speeds on that 90D. With that high resolution, every tiny bit of motion blur is way more obvious. If you grab a lens without stabilization, those kids are gonna be a blurry mess unless you've got amazing light. I'd suggest really thinking about the physical space. If you don't have tons of room to back up, that 85mm is gonna be way too tight for anything but headshots.
