Which budget prime lens is best for the Canon EOS R10?

Ive used Canon for years but this R10 crop is throwing me. Need a native prime for street stuff in Chicago under $300. My logic was the 50mm 1.8 but that 80mm equivalent is just way too tight for me. Is the 28mm pancake the right move or is the 16mm better?

The 16mm is gonna be too wide for most street stuff honestly, it ends up being around 25mm which is more like a landscape or architecture lens. If you want that classic street look, the Canon RF 28mm f2.8 STM is your best bet because it works out to roughly 45mm equivalent on the R10. Make sure to keep these specs in mind before you buy:

  • Focal length: 28mm gives you a 44.8mm equivalent, which is almost a perfect standard prime
  • Size: It is a true pancake lens, very stealthy for Chicago crowds
  • Optics: Significantly better edge-to-edge sharpness than the 16mm I would suggest being careful with the f/2.8 aperture if you plan on shooting late at night in the Loop, since you lose over a stop of light compared to your 50mm. Still, I'd avoid the Canon RF 16mm f2.8 STM for this. The native barrel distortion is pretty intense and requires heavy digital correction, plus 25mm usually feels too distorted for people. The 28mm is a much more solid choice for under $300 tho.
