i am honestly so fed up with this 18-45mm kit lens that came with my r50 its driving me crazy. every single photo i take indoors looks like a grainy mess and the blur is just unbearable whenever my daughter moves even a little bit. i feel like i wasted my money on this camera if it cant even handle a normal living room light... its making me so anxious that ill miss all the good shots on our trip to chicago next weekend. i have maybe $280 max to spend right now. i need a prime lens that actually performs in low light without being huge. which budget prime should i get for the r50?

  • I struggled with my daughter's birthday blur too until I bought the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM.
  • Just be careful, it's a very tight crop for small living rooms.

Just catching up on this and honestly that kit lens is mostly meant for bright sunlight... it really falls apart indoors. For the R50, I would suggest looking at these two specific options before your trip.

  • Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM: This is a pancake lens that makes your setup very portable. It is significantly faster than your kit lens, though be careful because f/2.8 is the limit for light gathering. It provides a natural field of view for street photography.
  • Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM: You might want to consider this for those tight Chicago indoor spaces. It is very wide, but make sure to keep your subjects away from the edges of the frame to avoid distortion. I would suggest the 28mm for general family photos. Just make sure you check your shutter speed settings even with a new lens so you dont get that blur again.
