Finally got the R6 II and I'm obsessed but I need a solid portrait lens for a graduation shoot im doing for my sister next month. I mostly do outdoor stuff so I want that creamy bokeh but my budget is capped at like $1100. I'm torn between:
- RF 85mm f2 Macro
- Used EF 85mm f1.4L IS with the adapter
The RF 85mm is tempting because it's native and light but I'm worried the f2 won't be enough for that really blurry look. But then the EF version is a total brick to carry around all day. Does the older EF glass still autofocus fast enough on the R6 II or should I stick with native?
Unfortunately, the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM isn't quite the native solution people usually hope for. The STM motor is honestly a bit clunky and slow compared to high-end USM glass, which makes it feel less like a pro tool for fast-paced shoots. If you're chasing that specific creamy look, f2 usually falls short of expectations when you've got busy backgrounds, as the separation just isn't there. The Canon EF 85mm f1.4L IS USM is definitely better glass but it's massive and the balance on an R6 II with the adapter is pretty terrible for long days. It's a lot of weight for older tech. Before I give a final verdict, are you shooting in cramped urban areas or open parks? The background distance changes how that f2 bokeh actually renders and whether the compression will save the image for you.
