So I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to the R6 Mark II after years on my old 5D setup and wow the eye autofocus is just on another level compared to my old dslr days. I've always been a die hard 85mm f/1.8 user but honestly on this new sensor im starting to feel like my old EF glass with the adapter is just missing that bit of pop or sharpness i see everyone talking about online. I have about $1800 saved up and I really need to nail some shots for my sisters wedding this coming October in a big botanical garden so lighting is gonna be all over the place. Im stuck between just getting the RF 85mm f2 or if I should just starve for a month and go for the f1.2 version... or even that 135mm everyone is raving about lately. Is the compression on the 135mm too much for full body shots or should I just stick with the classic 85 focal length for the R6 sensor specifically? I've heard the IBIS works better with certain native lenses too so I'm just kinda lost in the specs right now. Which one are you guys actually seeing the best results with for those creamy backgrounds?

I politely disagree about the 135mm being the best outdoor choice! The field of view is way too restrictive for full-body portraits in a garden. Honestly, the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM is a fantastic technical pick! It features 5 stops of optical IS that hits 8 stops with your R6 II body. The sharpness data is amazing for the price, and you wont be starving for a month!

Building on the earlier suggestion, I've been super happy using the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lately. Its technically a macro, but the bokeh control is wild for portraits.

  • 8 stops of combined stabilization with the R6 II
  • SA control ring to adjust the bokeh feel
  • Fast AF for candid wedding moments Honestly, I did a garden shoot last month and didnt miss the 85mm f/1.2 at all... that extra reach really helps with full body shots.

Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.
