Ive been shooting street for a decade now mostly on my old 5D, but I recently switched over to the Canon R7 for the weight. Honestly the autofocus is incredible but Im struggling with the 1.6x crop factor way more than I thought I would. My old 35mm feels way too tight now and Im missing shots because Im constantly backing up into traffic.
I have a trip to Tokyo in three weeks so I need to figure this out fast. Ive got about $600 to spend and Im looking for a prime that gives me a classic 35mm equivalent field of view. Is the RF 24mm f/1.8 the way to go or is it too bulky for street?
> Is the RF 24mm f/1.8 the way to go ^ This. Also, Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM works well, dont think its bulky at all. The Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM is even smaller tho if weight is priority...
Just saw this and had to jump in because I lived this exact scenario! I took my R7 to Osaka last year and ran into the same issue with my old glass feeling way too narrow. Honestly, you should just grab the Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM right now. It is absolutely amazing for street work because the image stabilization is a lifesaver when the sun goes down in Shinjuku or Shibuya.
- The f/1.8 aperture is fantastic for that night-time vibe
- Its super light so you wont get a sore neck after walking all day
- Macro focus lets you get cool detail shots of street food or signs Tbh, check for a refurbished one on the Canon site. I saved like 120 bucks doing that and used the extra cash for more ramen. You wont regret it, the lens feels like it was made for the R7 body... its totally not bulky compared to those old 5D setups we used to lug around!
I struggled with the crop factor too when I first moved to the R7. For that classic 35mm feel, the Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro is definitely your best bet. It isnt bulky at all in person.
- Canon RF 24mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro: Fast AF and great in low light.
- Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM: Tiny pancake lens but slightly tighter at 45mm equivalent. The 24mm works perfectly for Tokyo.
