ive got my sisters engagement shoot coming up in two weeks and im totally stressing because i only have the kit lens for my canon r7. i really need a proper prime lens for portraits but im stuck between two and cant decide what makes more sense for the crop sensor.
- rf 50mm f1.8 (super cheap but is it sharp enough?)
- rf 85mm f2 (worried about the crop factor making it too long indoors)
budget is strictly under 600 bucks since im a student. i mostly do outdoor shots in the park but we might do some at a local cafe too. is the 85mm gonna be a nightmare in small spaces or should i just get the 50 and call it a day... i really dont want to mess this up for her.
- Grab the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
- That Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM hits 136mm on crop... total nightmare for cafes
- 50mm gives you a better 80mm equivalent
@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly, just go for the Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM. Its super light, works way better in cafes, and you wont be backing into walls trying to frame shots.
^ This. Also, I unfortunately found that those budget primes arent as sharp as I expected on the R7 sensor. I think I heard they get some weird purple fringing too... not totally sure if thats just a rumor though. Quick question, how cramped is that cafe actually gonna be? Honestly, a wider 35mm might be way less stressful for those indoor shots, might be worth a look.
Reply 5 - good point! honestly ive been super satisfied with my gear lately and havent had any complaints. if you want to be 100 percent sure though, you should really do a little diy research before you spend the money. its way safer than just taking our word for it. i always double check everything before i buy stuff.
- just jump on youtube and search for canon r7 prime lens comparison. theres a ton of videos that show exactly how different focal lengths look in small rooms vs outside.
- search reddit too for real world samples. seeing actual files from other users is way more helpful than just reading specs and it really helps you feel more confident about your choice.
- i remember seeing a really detailed comparison video a while back that covers exactly what youre worried about. if you search for it on google it usually pops up right away.

Works great for me
