I just got this Canon R6 and I honestly have no idea how to use it yet but my family is going to the Grand Canyon next Friday and I really want to take those huge landscape photos. I was looking at lenses and there are so many numbers like 14mm and 35mm and I am just totally lost. I spent most of my money on the camera so I only have about $500 left. Is that even enough? I dont want to buy the wrong thing and not be able to fit the whole view in the frame. Sorry if this is a dumb question but what wide angle lens should I get for the R6?

Just caught this thread today and oh man, you are going to LOVE the R6!! It is such a killer camera and taking it to the Grand Canyon for your first big trip is basically a dream scenario. Totally agree with what was said earlier about the focal length numbers... basically the smaller the number, the more of that massive canyon you can actually fit into one shot without having to back up into a cactus lol. Since you are on a budget but want quality, I would seriously look at the Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. It usually hovers right around that $500 mark and it is honestly perfect for landscapes because it is super light to carry around all day. It is wide enough to get those wow shots but has a bit of zoom too which is nice. If you want to save even more cash, maybe check out the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM. It is not quite as wide as the 15mm, but it is dirt cheap used and honestly surprisingly sharp for the price. Quick tip for the trip: definitely try taking a few vertical shots and stitching them together into a panorama later. It makes the canyon look even more ginormous than a single wide shot ever could! Also, try to shoot during the hour right after sunrise. The shadows and colors on the rocks will literally blow your mind. You are gonna get some incredible photos regardless tho, just enjoy the view!

Quick reply while I have a sec. Honestly, $500 is tight for full-frame glass but you can definitely make it work for your trip. Since you're heading to the Grand Canyon, you want a low number for the focal length because that means a wider field of view. 16mm is gonna be way wider than 35mm and basically lets you fit the whole horizon in. I'd suggest looking at the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM. It's super tiny and light, plus it fits your budget easily. It's a prime lens though, so you can't zoom in or out. The image quality is decent, tho it relies on in-camera software to fix some distortion. If you want more flexibility, the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is a solid alternative. It's not as wide, but you can zoom in on distant rocks. Both are safe, reliable options for a beginner. Make sure you practice before Friday so you arent fumbling with settings!
