Ive been shooting with the S5ii for a while now and Im honestly just getting so frustrated with the 50mm I have. It just doesnt give me that compression or background melt I need for this outdoor wedding Im shooting in Seattle next month.

Ive been doing portraits for years but switching to L-mount has been a bit of a headache figuring out which glass is actually worth it. My budget is firm at $1200 and Im looking at the Sigma 85mm 1.4 but Im worried its gonna be a total anchor on my neck all day. Which prime lens is really the best for portraits on L-mount right now?

To add to the point above: I spent years lugging around heavy glass and my neck still hates me for it lol. The Sigma 105mm f2.8 DG DN Macro Art is a solid choice. It works for portraits and ring shots, though the f2.8 isnt quite as melty as a 1.4. Quick tip: get a BlackRapid Sport Breathe strap. It really helps with weight distribution during those long wedding days in Seattle.

tbh if the weight of the sigma is scaring you off, you should look at the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8. i used it for a couple shoots and its honestly great for the price. it gives you that compression you want without feeling like a brick in your bag. heres a few reasons why i like it:

  • super light compared to the art series
  • focus is really fast on the s5ii
  • leaves you plenty of room in your budget for extra batteries or a flash it might not be as creamy as the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art which is about 1100 dollars, but the panasonic is way more practical for all-day events. for a seattle wedding where you might be moving around a lot, having a lighter setup is a huge plus. let me know if you need more info on how it handles low light.
