Which prime lens is a must-have for Nikon full-frame shooters?

What is the one prime lens that you think is an absolute must-have for a Nikon full-frame shooter? I have been shooting on Nikon bodies for a solid 15 years now, mostly sticking to the D850 and my old reliable D750, and I always thought I was a zoom guy through and through. My 24-70mm f/2.8 has basically been glued to my camera for every gig. But I just finally made the switch to the Z8 last month and I am finding that my old F-mount glass just doesnt feel the same even with the FTZ adapter, or maybe my eyes are just getting pickier now that the sensor is so much sharper.

I have this really high-end garden wedding coming up in the Cotswolds in about three weeks and the couple specifically asked for that dreamy, shallow depth of field look for the portraits. My zooms are great for the ceremony but they just feel a bit clinical for what I need here. I have a budget of around 1800 to 2000 bucks to spend on one killer prime that will stay in my bag forever. I was looking at the 50mm f/1.2 S because everyone raves about it but man that thing is a tank and I am worried about hauling it around a garden for ten hours.

Then I look at the 85mm options and get even more confused. Is the 1.8 S line actually good enough or do I need to starve for a month to afford the 1.2? I used to think I knew my gear inside and out but this whole transition to mirrorless primes has me second guessing everything I thought I knew about focal lengths and rendering. Is there a magic lens in the Z lineup that everyone just agrees on? Im looking for something with incredible micro-contrast and that really smooth fall-off but I dont want to make a mistake and buy something that just ends up being too niche for daily use. What is the workhorse prime for you guys...

Late to the party but honestly, before you drop two grand, make sure to consider the weight. Are you shooting mostly natural light or using flash for those garden portraits?

You might want to consider the Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S since it's lighter. Do you prioritize portability or the absolute maximum depth of field for those portraits?

Re: "Late to the party but honestly, before you..."

  • Shawn is spot on about that weight being a factor, but honestly, I have the exact same problem as you and I am totally stuck. This same decision has been eating at me for about a month since I got my Nikon Z8 and I still cannot figure out which path to take. It is really stressing me out because:
  • That high-end look is tempting but the bank account is screaming
  • Carrying huge glass all day sounds like a total nightmare for my back
  • The fear of buying the cheaper 1.8 and missing out on the rendering is real Reviews and videos havent helped at all, and I am basically no closer to a decision than when I started. After shooting Nikon for twenty years, it is wild to be this stumped, but the Z system changes everything. It is kind of a relief to see someone else struggling with this too tho... thought it was just me being way too picky.
