So I finally bit the bullet and pulled the trigger on the R5 Mark II after shooting with my old 5D Mark IV for what feels like a lifetime. The autofocus on this thing is absolutely insane but my old EF 24-70 f/2.8 II is starting to show its age when Im trying to push these 45mp files and the adapter setup is honestly getting a bit clunky for everyday carry. I really want something native that can keep up with the burst rates without hunting. Im doing a lot of travel and event work lately so I need something versatile. I was looking at the RF 24-70 f/2.8 of course but then I saw the 24-105 f/4 and even that crazy 24-105 f/2.8 Z lens. The f/2.8 Z is probably way too huge for hiking around Japan next month which is my next big trip but the f/4 feels like it might be too slow for low light receptions. My budget is roughly $2500 but I could stretch it if the glass is really worth it for the long haul. Anyone moved from adapted EF to native RF glass on this body yet? Is the 24-70 still the king or is the extra reach on the 105 worth the trade off in stop? Im kind of stuck in decision paralysis here and dont want to waste money on the wrong glass...

Moving from the 5D IV to the R5 II is a significant jump. For travel and event work, it really depends on your tolerance for weight versus low-light performance. Ive used all three on the R5 and here is the breakdown:

This is the most direct replacement for your EF lens. It works well with the 45mp sensor and the autofocus is noticeably faster than using the adapter. For events, having that f/2.8 aperture helps keep the ISO down in dim venues. Its the safest bet for high-stakes work.

A decent option for hiking since its lighter and has more reach. The 105mm end is kinda useful for street photography in Japan. However, it might struggle at receptions unless you use a lot of flash, as f/4 lets in half as much light as your current lens. Tbh, you might find it too slow for what you're used to.

The performance is top-tier but the size is a major drawback for travel. Its basically a studio or video lens. Carrying this through Japan would be exhausting and it probably wont fit well in a standard daypack. The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is probably the right move. It stays within your $2500 budget and provides the consistency you need for events while being manageable for travel. The extra reach of the 105mm is nice, but for professional events, the faster glass usually wins...
