Best lens for kids photos on Canon Rebel SL3?

I’ve got a Canon Rebel SL3 and I mostly use the kit lens, but it’s struggling when I’m chasing my kids around indoors and at the park. I’m looking for a lens that can lock focus quickly and handle low light better (birthday parties, living room, etc.) without everything turning blurry. I don’t need crazy zoom range, but I do want nice background blur for portraits and something that’s not huge or heavy on the SL3. Budget is around $300–$600. What lens would you recommend for kid photos on the SL3, and why?

- I’d agree with the “grab a fast prime” idea here — on the SL3 it’s honestly the biggest upgrade for indoor kid chaos.
- In my experience, going with a small, bright Canon-native prime (one of those f/1.8-ish options) made focus feel way snappier than the kit lens, and it kept shutter speeds high enough that the kiddos weren’t just blur blobs.
- One tiny thing: be careful shooting wide open all the time… depth of field gets THIN and you’ll miss eyes a lot. I usually stop down a touch (like f/2.2–2.8) and just bump ISO.
- Also, make sure to use the SL3’s continuous AF + burst, and focus on the eye, you know? gl!
