Just got my hands on an R5 and honestly Im pretty stoked! Finally upgraded from my old 5D Mark IV and the AF is just mind-blowing. Now Im stuck trying to figure out the best all-around glass to keep on it because the kit lens just isnt cutting it for what I need.
I really need something versatile for travel and street photography. I spent all night digging through forums and I keep seeing people swear by the RF 24-105 f/4 L, but others are dead set on the 24-70 f/2.8. My logic was that the extra stop of light on the 24-70 would be a life saver for low light, but its so heavy and expensive compared to the 24-105. Plus I read that the 24-105 is way more practical for hiking trips in the PNW where I dont wanna swap lenses every five minutes. Budget is around 2500 bucks and I really need to pull the trigger before a trip to Japan in November. Is the weight savings of the f/4 actually worth losing that light, or am I gonna regret not having the 2.8 indoors? Im honestly so torn on this...
Agree about the weight being a pain. Unfortunately, the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM had issues with sharpness for me, so maybe look at the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM instead.
Congrats on the R5 upgrade. Honestly, before you spend that cash, what kind of street photography are you actually doing? Low light vs reach is a huge trade-off.
- Be careful with the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM weight if you are doing long days in Japan.
- If you really need low light, maybe check if you can fit the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM in your bag for nights.
