Building on the earlier suggestion, honestly its a joke what Canon is charging for these lenses nowadays. This whole RF transition feels like a blatant cash grab.

• They lock out third-party manufacturers who actually make affordable macro glass.

I totally feel that. If you're okay with things being a bit bulky, I'd suggest being careful with those cheaper non-L RF primes. They mostly only do 1:2 magnification which isnt true macro. You might want to consider picking up an Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and finding a used Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. Its a total tank, works perfectly on the R system, and youll save enough for a decent flash setup. Just make sure to check the AF motor if you buy used... sometimes the older ones get a bit noisy after years of use.
