honestly im so fed up with my old sigma zoom, the autofocus just crapped out again right before a big job next week. i literally spent most of my savings on this 5D Mark IV body thinking it would fix my problems but now im stuck with no wide lens and a really tight budget of like $400 maybe $500 max. i need something for real estate photos in chicago and i cant afford those crazy L series lenses right now. everything i look at is either super expensive or looks like garbage quality-wise and im starting to panic. what is the best budget wide-angle lens for the 5D Mark IV that actually looks sharp?

Man, I totally feel that frustration. Buying the 5D IV is a big jump and lenses eat your wallet fast. Since you are doing real estate, you dont really need a super fast aperture like f/2.8 because you'll be on a tripod most of the time anyway. Honestly, I have been super happy with the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM. You can find them used everywhere for under $450. It might be an L series, but this one is the budget king of the lineup. Here is why it works well:

  • It is super sharp at f/8, which is where you'll be shooting to keep the whole room in focus.
  • The USM autofocus is way more reliable than third party glass, so no more crapping out during jobs.
  • It handles distortion nicely, so your walls stay straight and true. Its been my go-to for years and it works well... no complaints at all.
