Yeah, 85mm is the way to go. The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is a solid option under 800. It's sharper than the 50mm, tho the AF speed wont win any races.
Ive tried many setups and I think an 85mm prime is kinda what you need. IIRC, budget ones exist.
