honestly fed up with this tiny kit lens it basically has zero reach and everything looks like crap when i crop. my sons soccer season starts in ten days and i really need a decent zoom but i only got about $450 to spend. what are the top budget zoom lenses that actually work for the r50?
Quick reply while I have a sec... honestly I had a pretty rough time starting out with the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM. I bought it thinking it would solve my reach problems, but unfortunately it was a bit of a letdown for sports. Here is why I didn't like it:
- the f/7.1 aperture at the long end is way too slow for fast movement unless the sun is out
- I had issues with motion blur when I tried to keep my ISO low
- the build quality feels kinda cheap I missed several goals because the autofocus just couldnt lock on in the afternoon shade. It was super frustrating. If you can find a used Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM, jump on it. It works on the R50 and the Nano USM focus is way faster for tracking players than those basic STM motors. It is a bit bigger, but you actually get the reach you need for a soccer field.
Hey, totally get the frustration with that tiny kit lens. It's okay for basic stuff but soccer is basically impossible without a real zoom. I've been shooting for a long time and honestly you've got two solid options that work well without breaking the bank. I've been super happy with the results from these.
- Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM - this is the natural upgrade. It's super light and definitely fits your 450 dollar budget with room to spare.
- Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM - if you can find this refurbished or on sale, grab it. It has way better reach for the far end of the field. No complaints with either tho. The 55-210 is way more portable but that 100-400 is killer for sports... just watch for a sale or used deal since it sits right at the edge of your budget.
Good to know!
