I just pulled the trigger on the R5 Mark II and it basically cleared out my savings so I really only have room for one serious do-it-all lens right now. Im trying to decide between the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L and the RF 24-105mm f/4L. I mainly do a mix of travel photography and taking photos of my kids who never sit still lol. We are actually headed to Japan in late October so I need something that can handle street shots at night but isnt gonna break my back while I'm walking 20k steps a day around Tokyo.

The 24-70 is super tempting for the f/2.8 because I shoot a lot of low light stuff indoors and love that bokeh, but man it is heavy and costs a chunk more. On the other hand, the 24-105 has that extra reach which is great for when I cant get close to the kids at the park, but I'm worried f/4 wont do justice to the sensor on the R5II especially in dim restaurants or subways. I also briefly looked at the 28-70 f/2 but that thing is a literal brick and way out of my budget anyway. I've got about $2400 left to spend after the body purchase.

Given I want to really take advantage of the new autofocus and that high resolution without constantly swapping glass in the wind, which one would you pick as the ultimate daily driver for this specific body?

> Re: "Building on the earlier suggestion..." Agree, the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is safer. Just watch your budget. I'd suggest:

  • Get a good protective filter
  • Use a padded strap to save your neck

Building on the earlier suggestion, I've found over the years that f/4 is usually a gamble on high-res bodies like the R5II. If you're doing 20k steps in Tokyo, the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is the safer long-term play for your money. That f/2.8 gives the AF sensor way more light to track kids when things get dim indoors. Plus, with 45MP, you can basically just crop to get that 105mm reach anyway.

Go Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM! It is amazing for that sensor.

  • f/2.8 helps AF tracking
  • Better corner sharpness Fantastic choice for Tokyo! Ask if you need settings tips.
