My old EF glass just isnt cutting it on the R5 resolution so I was thinking the 24-105 f4 for my trip to Scotland next month but my logic was maybe the 24-70 2.8 is better for low light?
Budget is tight after buying the body... is f4 sharp enough for 45mp or am I gonna regret it?
> Budget is tight after buying the body... is f4 sharp enough for 45mp or am I gonna regret it? Jumping in here because i did exactly this. I was worried about the cost and ended up grabbing a refurbished Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM to stay safe. Honestly, i am very satisfied with that choice. The f/4 is perfectly sharp for the R5 and saved me a ton of cash. No complaints, it handles everything just fine.
I saw your post earlier while I was out. I was in the same boat last year and went with the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. I've been super satisfied with how it handles the R5 sensor.
- Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: Reach is killer for travel shots.
- Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM: Way more expensive and bulky. Honestly, dont sweat the f/4. The stabilization is so good you wont miss that extra stop.
Honestly, I've been in your shoes before where the budget feels a bit thin after dropping all that cash on a body. In my experience shooting with the R5, you definitely dont need to stress about the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM not being sharp enough. People get obsessed with the f/2.8 versions, but for a trip to Scotland where you're gonna be shooting landscapes and castle ruins, that extra reach to 105mm is way more valuable than one stop of light. Over the years, I've tried many setups and for travel, the weight savings of the f/4 lens is a total godsend. Since you have the R5, the in-body image stabilization is basically magic. You can handhold shots at crazy slow shutter speeds to compensate for the f/4 aperture in low light... I've taken sharp photos at half a second handheld with that lens. If you are really worried about the 45mp sensor showing flaws, dont be. The RF glass is a whole different beast compared to the old EF stuff. It resolves detail beautifully. If the L lens is still pushing the budget too much, you could look at the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM but honestly on an R5, you will probably want the constant aperture and weather sealing for those Scottish mists. Go with the f/4L, you wont regret it and your wallet (and back) will thank you. If you need any more tips on what to pack for the Highlands just let me know.
