What is actually the best wide-angle lens for the Canon EOS R5 right now if I need total sharpness across the whole frame? I’ve been shooting professionally for like 12 years now and I thought I had my kit dialed in after moving from my old 5D4 to the R5 last year but man, I am running into some real issues. I’ve been sticking with my EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III using the EF-RF adapter and it was fine for a while but I just landed this huge contract for a luxury hotel chain here in Chicago and the test shots I took yesterday are just... not it. The corners are looking way softer than I remember and the chromatic aberration is driving me crazy when I’m trying to pull detail out of the window frames. I don’t know if it’s just the 45 megapixel sensor being way more demanding or if my adapter is acting up but I need a native RF solution fast.

I’m looking at the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L because of the stabilization but then I see people talking about the RF 14-35mm f/4L being sharper? Budget isn't really the main issue—I can drop up to $2,600 if I have to—but I need to make a decision by tonight so I can get it shipped before my shoot next Thursday. Does the f/2.8 version really hold up at the edges or should I just get a prime? I’ve heard the RF 10-20mm is insane but maybe too wide for standard interiors and might have too much distortion to fix in post? I'm honestly spiraling a bit because I can't afford to mess this shoot up. Is the 15-35 the gold standard or is there something else I’m missing that handles the high res sensor better...

The Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM is seriously amazing and way better for the wallet! I love using it on my R5 because its so crisp. Definitely skip the f/2.8 if you want to save money.

  • super affordable
  • really sharp images
  • fits any budget Honestly, why spend double? This lens is a total win for real-world shooting and your hotel pics will look fantastic!

Honestly, I've been using the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM for my commercial work and I'm very satisfied with the results. It works well on the R5 sensor and the edge-to-edge sharpness is miles ahead of the EF version on an adapter. No complaints about chromatic aberration either. It's a bit of an investment, but for high-stakes hotel shoots, having that native communication is definitely worth the cost... you wont regret it.

Re: "Honestly, I've been using the Canon RF 15-35mm..."

  • I agree that the native communication is likely the safest route, but I am currently dealing with the exact same issue. I have been using the Canon EOS R5 for about three months now. My adapted wide-angle lenses are definitely showing soft corners that I never noticed on my old bodies. I have looked at the various RF zooms and primes. Still, I cant find a definitive consensus on which one is the most reliable for high-resolution work. It is a frustrating spot to be in. Your professional reputation relies on gear that you feel uncertain about... i am still trying to find a clear answer myself.

I moved to native options for my high-res bodies and felt very satisfied.

  • Improved corner rendering
  • Flawless AF communication The results finally match the sensors potential.
