What single Canon lens would you recommend as the best all-around option for travel photography? I'm looking for a versatile lens that can handle landscapes, portraits, street photography, and everything in between, minimizing the need to carry multiple lenses. Should I prioritize a wide-angle zoom, a standard zoom, or perhaps a travel-specific lens? What are the essential features and considerations for choosing a truly versatile travel lens?

Adding my two cents here. I've been really satisfied with the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM for all my trips lately. Its my go-to because it just works without the hassle of carrying a bag full of glass.

  • Focal Range: You get 24mm for wide street scenes and 240mm for zooming into distant architectural details. Its basically like having three lenses in one.
  • Nano USM motor: It locks onto focus instantly and is silent, which is huge for video or not being noticed while shooting street candids.
  • Reliability: Since you arent constantly switching lenses, you arent exposing your sensor to dust or moisture while youre out in the elements. No complaints at all regarding the image quality for general travel use. Its super reliable for getting the shot every time and being ready for anything that pops up.

Re: "Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is the best..."

  • I totally agree with that. It covers so much ground for a single lens. But honestly, be careful if you start looking at other brands just to save a few bucks. I have messed around with some third-party glass on adapters and the autofocus just isnt as snappy or reliable as native Canon glass. That can be a real pain when you are trying to catch a quick street shot before it is gone. I would suggest sticking with the higher-end Canon glass for travel. You might want to consider that the cheaper consumer lenses sometimes feel a bit plasticky and might not survive a rough trip if you get caught in the rain or drop your bag. If you really want that versatility and peace of mind, just get any of the professional zooms from Canon. You really cant go wrong with their pro gear. It is basically built like a tank and the colors are usually way better than the budget alternatives. Just make sure to watch out for the weight tho... some of those nicer ones are kinda heavy for a full day of walking.
