Honestly im just so fed up with my current setup. I bought the R7 specifically for birding because of that crazy crop factor but my current glass is just not cutting it. Ive been dragging around my old EF 100-400mm with the adapter and it works okay sometimes but the autofocus is constantly hunting and missing focus on fast moving stuff and I am just about ready to throw the whole bag into the local lake out of pure frustration. I need something sharper that actually keeps up with the 32mp sensor cause right now my shots look soft and noisy and I feel like im wasting the cameras potential.
I have a trip to Yellowstone coming up in about six weeks so I need to get this sorted like yesterday. Budget is around 2k maybe a little more if its really worth it but I cant drop five grand on those massive prime lenses. I mostly shoot raptors and deer in the woods near my house in Oregon and the lighting is usually pretty mediocre which makes the f/7.1 or f/8 stuff pretty painful. Ive heard conflicting things about the RF 100-500 vs that cheaper 100-400 or even the 800mm prime but I just cant decide. Is the 100-500 actually worth the extra grand over the smaller 100-400? I just want to capture some decent shots without the camera failing me every time something actually moves.
Which lens is actually the best move for wildlife on the R7 without breaking the bank completely or losing my mind because the autofocus just stops working?

In my experience, throwing money at the newest glass wont fix bad shutter speeds in the Oregon woods. If your aperture is already hurting, adding a teleconverter will only make the autofocus hunt more. Keep your distance, watch your ISO, and maybe rent first.
