What wide-angle lens am I supposed to buy for this Canon EOS R5 camera? I am so frustrated because I bought this thing for my big trip to the Grand Canyon next month but I have no idea how these lenses work and they are all so expensive. I spent way too much on the camera body and only have maybe $1000 left for a lens but all the ones people recommend are like two thousand dollars?? I just want to take big landscape pictures but the numbers like 14mm or 15-35mm make no sense to me. Sorry if this is a stupid question I just feel like I am in over my head and need something simple that just works... help
- Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is your safest, most reliable choice.
- Lower numbers mean more fits in. In my experience, its basically foolproof for beginners.
Late to the party but you might want to consider being careful with your budget. I once tripped on a trail and was glad I didnt have a 2k lens on me.
- Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM: Tiny and super wide for big views, but no zoom.
- Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R + Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM: Pro build and very reliable for your budget. Make sure to grab a good strap!
Just catching up on this thread... tbh, putting a cheap 15-30mm on a beast like the R5 feels a bit like putting budget tires on a Ferrari. ^ This. Also, instead of the 17-40mm that was mentioned, you should definitely look for a used Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM. In my experience, its significantly sharper than that older glass. That R5 sensor is basically unforgiving and wont hide any blur or softness in your landscape shots. I have tried many setups over the years and this specific EF lens is a total landscape legend. You can easily find them used for under $650 these days. Pair it with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and you are still way under your $1000 budget with enough left over for a solid tripod or some filters for the canyon. TL;DR: Grab a used EF 16-35mm f/4L. It is pro-grade glass for a bargain price and miles better than the plastic consumer RF zooms.
Nice, didn't know that
Oh man, dont worry at all! You picked an incredible camera, the R5 is literally a beast for landscapes and you are gonna have the best time at the Grand Canyon with it. I totally get the frustration with the prices though, those L-series lenses are pricey!! But honestly you dont need to spend $2500 to get amazing shots. Since you have about $1000, you actually have some fantastic options that will work perfectly. Here is what I would look at right now:
- Canon RF 14-35mm f/4 L IS USM
- This is the gold standard for what you want. It usually sits a bit over a grand new, but if you look for a refurbished or used one, you can definitely find it for around $1000. It is super sharp and that 14mm is perfect for those massive canyon views!
- Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM
- This one is way under your budget and super lightweight. If you dont want to deal with used gear, just grab this. It covers that wide range you need and is very simple to use.
- Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM
- This is a tiny little prime lens (it doesnt zoom). It is super cheap and surprisingly good if you just want one setting that is really wide. Basically, the smaller the number like 14mm, the wider the view is... so you can fit the whole canyon in one frame! Just pick one of these and go practice in your neighborhood before the trip. Youre gonna get some epic shots, seriously!
