My old DSLR is driving me absolutely insane. It focuses so slow that I keep missing shots of my toddler running around the backyard and honestly at this point I just want to throw the thing in the trash. I really need to upgrade to something mirrorless before our family vacation in three weeks but prices look like they havent moved an inch. Im in the US and looking to keep this under 1200 bucks. Has anyone actually seen any decent sales on bodies or kits lately because everything I look at seems to be full price still and im getting pretty desperate to just get something that actually works...

DSLR autofocus contrast-detection is just not cutting it for moving kids anymore. You really need phase-detection pixels, which are standard in mirrorless now. Be careful though, some entry-level models still hunt in low light. If you are stuck at 1200 bucks, make sure you look for something with decent eye-tracking algorithms, otherwise you are just swapping one headache for another. I would suggest looking at the Sony a6400 Mirrorless Camera 24.2MP APS-C because the real-time eye autofocus is basically magic for toddlers. It locks on so fast you wont miss those backyard moments. Just be aware that the menu system is kinda deep and takes some time to learn. You might want to consider the Canon EOS R50 Mirrorless Camera 24.2MP APS-C as well if you want something more intuitive, but be careful with the lens selection since the RF-S mount is still growing. Dont waste your money on older DSLR glass adapters if you want true speed. Stick to native lenses so the focus motor can actually keep up with your kid. Check major retailers for open-box deals since new stock rarely dips below MSRP unless a new model just launched.

Honestly, prices haven't been great lately and waiting for a sale is risky before your trip. I actually had issues with the autofocus performance on some of the cheaper entry-level bodies I tried, so be careful not to just grab the cheapest thing you see. If you need something reliable under that 1200 budget, maybe look at the Sony Alpha a6400 24.2MP APS-C Mirrorless. It has real-time eye AF that sticks to faces like glue. I also tried the Fujifilm X-T30 II 26.1MP Mirrorless and it was fine, but the Sony menu system is a bit more straightforward if you just want to grab and shoot. Dont waste money on older tech, just stick to something modern.
