I just bought this fancy Fuji XT5 for my trip to Japan next month and I am so lost. I spent like $1700 on the body and now I have zero clue what lens to buy. People keep saying get a prime but there are so many numbers?? 23mm, 35mm, 56mm... my brain is melting. My logic was maybe the 35mm f2 because it's cheap but then I saw a video saying 23mm is better for street stuff. I just want one lens that does everything because I'm already over my $2000 budget and I'm totally stressed. I don't want to carry a bag of lenses around Tokyo. Is there one that just works for everything? Sorry if this is stupid but I'm literally staring at my cart and about to give up...

Regarding what #1 said, Id actually check out the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Fujifilm X. It fits your budget better, handles low light well, and is sharp enough for that 40mp sensor.

To add to the point above: I agree the Sigma is a great value, but in my experience, weather sealing is a must for Japan. I've tried many lenses over the years and the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 35mm f2 R WR is the safest, most reliable choice for your budget. It's tiny and handles rain like a pro. Quick tip: buy used to save cash for your trip. Feel free to ask about specific shops if you're stuck.

I have been very satisfied with this setup for travel. For Japan, you basically need something reliable. Compact. Something that wont fail in the rain.

  • I recommend the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f2 R WR.
  • It is weather-resistant and works well for both narrow streets and scenery.
  • The autofocus is fast, which is great for busy areas. Im quite happy with this choice. No complaints.
