I've recently started using a Fujifilm X-T5 and I'm looking to dive deeper into street photography. I’m torn between a few prime lenses and can't decide which one to commit to. I really want something compact and fast enough for low-light shots, but I’m struggling to choose between the classic 23mm f/2 and the tiny 27mm f/2.8 pancake. The 35mm f/2 also looks tempting for tighter shots, but I worry it might be too narrow for busy city streets. I’m looking for that perfect balance of portability and image quality. Which prime lens do you think offers the best overall experience for capturing candid moments on Fuji?
Sooo i stumbled upon this discussion and i feel u, choosing between these Fuji primes is lowkey a nightmare haha. Since youre on the Fujifilm X-T5, you gotta think about which glass actually resolves that 40MP sensor properly. - 23mm vs 27mm vs 35mm: The 23mm is the classic wide street lens, the 27mm is the tiny pancake for stealth, and the 35mm is better for tighter portraits.
- Pros/Cons: The Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR is fast and weather-sealed. The Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR is tiny but slower (f/2.8). The Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR is sharp but often too narrow for busy sidewalks.
- Best choice: I think the 23mm is the sweet spot for versatility and low light. Check out the 'OpticalLimits' website for technical MTF charts to see how they handle 40MP. Quick tip: Review ur metadata to see your most-used focal length before buying! gl!
For your situation, I think the cost-to-performance ratio is what matters most. Honestly, the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR is the best value play here. It’s usually around $450 and that f/2 aperture is basically essential if you’re doing any low-light stuff... the Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR is cool and tiny but f/2.8 can be a struggle when the sun goes down and its usually priced pretty high just for the pancake size. Ngl the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR is actually the cheapest of the "Fujicrons" and probably the sharpest on that 40MP sensor, but I agree it’s too tight for busy streets. I’d say grab a used 23mm f/2 if you can find one. It’s weather-sealed, fast, and light enough that you wont even feel it on your Fujifilm X-T5 all day. It just works for everything without breaking the bank. Cheers!
Late to the party but I love this topic! Honestly, while the standard stuff is cool, I think you might be missing a huge part of the picture. Like someone mentioned, that Fujifilm X-T5 sensor is a beast and really demands the right glass to stay reliable. I am gonna be that guy and say you should probably look for some of the newer, wider alternatives because they are amazing! Seriously though, there are fantastic resources that do the heavy lifting for you:
- Just search YouTube for Fuji 40MP street lens shootout and watch the first few vids
- Check the Fujifilm subreddit wiki, they have a massive breakdown of which lenses actually resolve 40MP
- Google Fuji street photography lens guide 2024 to see real-world stress tests I saw a fantastic video about this last week that totally changed my mind on the whole f/2 lineup... just look it up, it is usually the first result. It makes the decision so much easier and is way more reliable than just asking here!
@Reply #5 - good point! Just found this thread and wanted to share my experience after moving to the X-T5. I found that some of my older glass really struggled with the 40MP resolution. You might want to consider the Fujinon XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR. It is a bit larger, but the optics are actually designed for the high-res sensor. Just be careful with the older version tho, as the autofocus isn't nearly as snappy for street work. If you are worried about the high cost of the Fuji pancake, I would suggest looking at the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 AF Fujifilm X-Mount. It is a very affordable way to try out the pancake form factor for about $160. My experience with it was surprisingly good for a budget lens. Just make sure to keep the firmware updated through the lens cap port, which is a bit of a DIY quirk, but it really helps with the autofocus reliability on the T5 sensor.
Was looking at this earlier and I agree with Austinlon that the X-T5 sensor is demanding. I usually worry about using non-Fuji lenses because of compatibility stuff, but these two are worth looking at if you want to branch out from the standard Fuji primes:
- Sigma 23mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Fujifilm X-Mount is a very reliable alternative. It does not have the aperture ring which is kinda annoying, but it feels sturdy and the autofocus is snappy for street work.
- Viltrox AF 27mm f/1.2 Pro Fujifilm X-Mount is the powerhouse choice for that 40MP sensor. It is way bigger than the pancake, but it handles low light much better and the build quality feels pro. Quick tips:
- Stick to the Sigma if you want something that feels closer to native Fuji reliability and performance.
- Always check if your camera body firmware is current before mounting the Viltrox to avoid any weird errors.
