So I finally pulled the trigger on a silver X-T5 after saving up for what feels like forever. My old kit was a beat up a6000 and the jump in quality is honestly kinda overwhelming lol. But now I'm stuck in this massive rabbit hole trying to figure out what lens to actually live on this thing. I've got a big trip to Japan coming up in about seven weeks and I really dont want to be that guy lugging a huge bag of primes through Shinjuku. I want one 'do it all' zoom that wont make me regret leaving the others at home.

Right now I'm basically torn between three options and I keep changing my mind every hour. First is the Fuji 16-80mm f/4. The range is perfect for travel and the constant f/4 seems okay but I've read some horror stories about it not being sharp enough for the 40 megapixel sensor. Like, is it actually blurry or are people just being dramatic? My second choice is the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. It is so tiny and light which would be amazing for walking 15 miles a day, but I'm worried I'll miss having 16mm on the wide end for architecture stuff and temples. Plus no aperture ring on the Sigma feels a bit wrong on a Fuji body you know?

Then there's the 'pro' choice which is the 16-55mm f/2.8 red badge. I found a used one locally for like $850 which fits my budget but that thing is a literal brick. I'm worried my wrist is gonna give out by day three. Does the image quality really justify the weight compared to the others? I'm mostly shooting street scenes, some food shots, and definitely some landscape stuff in Kyoto. Budget is topped out at $1000-1100 max.

Which one would you guys actually pick if you could only take one for a month of travel? Is the 16-80 really that bad on the X-T5 sensor or should I just suck it up and carry the heavy 16-55...

I would be really careful with the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR on that new sensor. Honestly, it might struggle with corner sharpness. If you can handle the bulk, I suggest the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR for your trip.

  • 16mm is essential for those tight temple shots.
  • Constant f/2.8 is a lifesaver for night street scenes. Its a heavy brick, but the results are worth it!
