Are Sigma or Panasonic lenses better for L-mount street photography?

Ive been shooting street with my Lumix S5 for about three years now and honestly I love the color science but lately Ive been feeling like my glass situation is holding me back. I started out with the kit 20-60mm which is decent enough for travel but now that Im getting more serious about capturing candid street stuff in downtown Chicago I find myself needing something smaller and faster especially for the winter months coming up when the light just drops off after 4pm.

I have about 800 bucks to spend and Ive been going back and forth between picking up one of the Sigma I-series primes or just sticking with the Panasonic Lumix S line. I tried the Sigma 35mm f/2 and the build quality is insane, like really solid, but sometimes I feel like the focus transitions on my S5 are just snappier with native Panasonic glass. Is it just me or is the DFD system actually working better with the native primes? I really need something sharp that wont slow me down when I see a shot in the alleyways. Ive been eyeing the Panasonic 35mm f/1.8 because of the weight saving but those Sigma build aesthetics are so tempting and the aperture rings feel way better in the hand when your gloves are on.

Im kind of in a rush because I have a street photography workshop next month and I need to stop second guessing my kit and just commit to a lens. Has anyone actually compared these side by side for quick street work? Does the Sigma optical performance really justify the slight AF weirdness I think Im seeing or should I just stay native and play it safe with the Lumix lens...

Honestly, if you want that sharp look for street photography but need to stay within budget, ignore the hype and look at the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary. It is an absolute gem for street work! It is basically tiny, super light, and the way it renders focus fall-off is just gorgeous for candid shots. TL;DR: The Sigma I-series is stellar for build, but native Lumix glass wins on AF speed. If you can live with slightly slower focus, grab the 45mm. Otherwise, look for a used Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 to save some cash for your workshop fees. I get the DFD concern totally. Native glass uses that DFD map specifically tuned for the S5 sensor, which is why it feels snappier. Sigma lenses are fantastic optically but the contrast-detect system on the S5 has to work harder to verify focus, especially in low light. For winter alleyway shoots in Chicago, you really want that native speed. If I were you, I would snag the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 instead. It is cheaper than the 35mm f/1.8, razor sharp, and the weight is basically negligible. You save nearly 200 bucks compared to the Sigma I-series pricing, which easily covers a new strap or extra batteries for those cold sessions. Don't overthink the build quality stuff. The plastic on the Lumix primes is actually super durable and keeps your setup discreet when you're shooting in public spaces.
