I’m putting together a simple street setup on L-mount and I’m stuck on the lens choice. I mostly shoot in cities, often in the evening, and I want something small and discreet that won’t attract attention. I’m torn between a 35mm vs 50mm (full-frame equivalent) and I’m also wondering how important faster apertures are for street vs keeping the lens compact. Autofocus speed matters, but I’m fine with manual focus if it’s a good option. Budget is around $800–$1,200. What L-mount lens would you recommend for street photography, and why?
Seconding the 35/2 vibe above — f/2 is kinda the sweet spot for “evening street” without going huge. Two other L-mount options I’ve had good luck with:
- Panasonic LUMIX S 35mm F1.8: super clean AF, sharp wide open, still pretty lowkey.
- Leica Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 ASPH (used): 50 is more discreet distance-wise, and f/2 is honestly enough most nights.
If you go 50, just accept you’ll miss some “context” shots, you know?
Ok so quick warning: dont chase super-fast glass for street—big lenses scream “camera” and can get u unwanted attention. I’d actually go compact 50-ish with good sealing/hood, keep ISO up, and zone-focus; way more reliable.

Honestly, after lugging around heavy glass for years, I’ve found that the best street lens is the one that doesn't make your wrist ache after four hours of walking. I’ve been shooting with the Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary for a long time now and it's basically the perfect "middle ground" between a 35 and a 50. It’s incredibly tiny—I mean really low profile—which is a huge plus for staying under the radar. People usually just assume you're a tourist with a basic kit lens rather than a "serious" photographer. I know some folks worry about f/2.8 being a bit slow for evenings, but with modern L-mount sensors, you just bump the ISO a stop and it's honestly fine. The build quality is all metal and feels like it’ll handle years of daily use without falling apart. If you’re really cautious about the weather or getting caught in a sudden city drizzle, the Panasonic LUMIX S 50mm F1.8 is another reliable bet. It’s got proper weather sealing which gives me way more peace of mind when I'm out after dark. It’s a bit larger than the 45mm but still pretty light and fits well within your budget. Personally, I’d grab that 45mm for the discreet factor alone.
For your situation, I’d grab the Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN Contemporary (L-Mount) and call it a day. I’ve used it for city street stuff and it’s kinda the sweet spot: small, doesn’t scream “pro camera,” AF is snappy enough, and f/2 is actually useful once the sun’s gone (without going full chunky f/1.4). 35mm also forgives fast moments way better than 50mm, imo… you can frame quick and still get context.
If you’re dead set on 50, the Sigma 50mm F2 DG DN Contemporary (L-Mount) is also solid, just a bit tighter/less flexible on crowded sidewalks. And yeah, faster apertures help at night, but I’d rather have f/2 + small lens than a big attention magnet. gl!
Yep, this is the way
