So I finally pulled the trigger on a Lumix S5II and I am beyond hyped because I have a trip to Tokyo coming up in about three weeks. Its gonna be my first time doing real street photography there and I really want to nail those crisp high-contrast night shots but man picking a lens for the L-mount is actually way harder than I thought it would be. I am looking for the absolute sharpest prime lens I can get my hands on that doesnt feel like a literal brick in my hand.
I’ve been doing a ton of reading online and I keep seeing the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary being recommended for street stuff. People love that aperture ring and the build quality but then I see other reviewers saying it gets a bit soft in the corners compared to the more expensive Art series. Then there is the Panasonic 35mm f1.8 which is apparently clinical but light. I am just confused because some people say character is better for street but I really want that tack-sharp look where you can see every single raindrop on a window or the texture of the asphalt. I dont want dreamy or vintage I want detail.
Here is what I am looking for:
- Budget: I am trying to stay under 900 dollars if possible maybe a bit more if it is life-changing.
- Size: Needs to be small enough to walk around with for 10 hours a day.
- Focal length: Somewhere between 35mm and 50mm.
- Performance: Needs to be sharp even when I am shooting wide open at night.
I am also wondering about the Sigma 50mm f2 I series? I heard it is even sharper than the 35mm but is 50mm too tight for those crowded Tokyo alleys? I am used to 35mm on my old Fuji setup but the L-mount world is new to me and I dont want to waste money on a lens that looks dreamy when I actually want it to look like I can cut my eyes on the edges. What do you guys think is the gold standard for sharpness in this mount right now for a street shooter? Is the 35mm f1.4 Art just way too big for this or is it worth the weight jump...
Honestly, I was pretty disappointed with the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary corners. It just isnt as sharp as I expected. If you want that cut your eyes detail for Tokyo, here are the real options:
- Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f1.8 is surprisingly clinical and light.
- Sigma 50mm f2 DG DN Contemporary is sharper but might feel tight in alleys. Dont get the Art lens, its way too heavy for walking 10 hours. The Panny 35mm is basically the winner here.
Spot on about that clinical rendering, I've spent years analyzing resolution data for this system. Reminds me of my first big Tokyo trip where I overspent on a rig and then dropped my primary body right into a drainage ditch in Shibuya. I spent the next six hours trying to fish it out with a wire hanger while a group of tourists filmed me. By the time I got it back, the electronics were fried and I just ended up eating ramen in silence.
^ This. Also, I have been shooting street for years and honestly, you are gonna be way happier if you just look at what Sigma is doing with their compact metal primes. They totally nail that high-contrast look you want for Tokyo without draining your wallet.
- Just go with Sigma. Their build quality is insane for the price and they focus way faster than you would expect.
- Look for their compact line specifically. You wont regret the weight savings when you are eight hours into a walk through Shibuya.
- Stick to their newer releases from the last couple years. They have really figured out how to make glass that is super sharp across the whole frame without being massive. I have been using their smaller primes for a while now and no complaints here... the detail is wild. You dont need to drop thousands to get those crisp night shots. Just pick the focal length you like and go for it.
