I finally got my hands on the S5II and the autofocus is honestly a dream but im so frustrated with my current setup. I've been trying to make do with this old heavy adapted Sigma zoom but it keeps hunting and making this weird clicking noise that ruins my audio and im just totally fed up with it. I need something native and versatile because im heading to Tokyo in three weeks and dont want to carry five different primes. My budget is around 1100 bucks and I just want one lens that stays on the camera for 90% of the time. What is the best all-around zoom lens for the S5II that wont break my back?
Just catching up on this thread. Unfortunately, the Panasonic Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 was not as good as expected for low-light shots, which was a letdown.
- Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S.: Great focal range but sadly it felt quite heavy during my last trip.
- Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art: Superior optics but unfortunately way too bulky. The 24-105mm is technically your most versatile choice.
Like someone mentioned, weight is a total killer when you're walking miles in Tokyo. For $1100, you should look at the Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm f/4-7.1 Macro O.I.S.. It's basically the perfect travel lens.
- fits your budget easily
- silent AF for your video
- massive range Over the years, I've found that focal range usually beats a fast aperture for travel. This is my go-to for one-lens trips.
Honestly, for a trip like Tokyo, you should look at the Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary. In my experience, its way lighter than the Art series and perfect for travel. The autofocus is silent and snappy on the S5II, which fixes your audio issues. I've tried many zooms, but this is the most cost-effective choice that wont break your back. Let me know if you need more tips for the S5II!
