whats the best all-around zoom for L-mount if I can only pick one? torn between the lumix 24-105mm f4 and the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 art right now. i've got a trip to japan coming up in three weeks and i dont want to be swapping lenses in the rain or crowded subways. the 24-105 has the extra reach and stabilization but that f2.8 on the sigma is so nice for low light... i found both used for around $900-1000 which fits my budget but i just cant decide which trade-off is worth it for a solo travel setup. is the extra 35mm on the long end better than the extra stop of light??
I took the 28-70 to Osaka. Make sure to check these:
- Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary: Lighter, tho watch that 28mm start.
- Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm f4-7.1 Macro OIS: Best reach, just be careful in low light.
I was super satisfied taking the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. to Tokyo. That OIS is key. TL;DR: Lumix range beats the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art for solo travel.
Ngl, just go with the Sigma glass for Japan. Ive used their gear for years on L-mount and been super satisfied with the output. You really want that faster aperture when youre wandering through those Kyoto alleys at night... it just makes the shots pop. Why I like that brand:
- Better optics for the price
- That extra light is huge
- Just works well Just get any zoom from Sigma and youll be fine.
man i saw this and just had to post because travel gear can be such a massive headache. unfortunately my last big trip to kyoto was kind of a total disaster on the reliability front even though i thought i had everything dialed in.
- basically i had this weird mount connection issue where the camera kept losing contact with the lens and it drove me absolutely crazy while i was trying to navigate the gion district
- then the weather sealing on my setup which was supposedly top tier started acting up and i got fogging inside the elements because of the humidity... it was definitely not as good as expected
- honestly it was just so disappointing spending all that money and time prepping only to have the hardware fail right when the lighting was perfect really makes you realize that no matter what you end up picking, sometimes the gear just decides to have its own plans for your vacation lol. hope you have better luck than i did!
