I finally pulled the trigger on an S5II but now Im spiraling about the lens choice. I have this big trip to Japan in two weeks and I can only afford one do it all zoom since my budget is tapped out at $1100.
Im totally torn between the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and the Lumix 24-105mm f4. The Sigma seems better for moody night shots but the weight is making me nervous for long walking days. But the 24-105 has that extra reach I want for architecture... I just dont know if f4 is gonna cut it when it gets dark. Which one is the better all-rounder?
^ This. Also, I have been super satisfied with the Panasonic Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 for travel. Its incredibly light and that 20mm wide end is a total lifesaver for tight Tokyo streets and shrines.
- fits easily in a small bag
- 20mm is killer for architecture
- saves you a ton of cash Honestly, just crank the ISO at night. The S5II handles it like a champ... works well for me!
In my experience hauling gear through Osaka, weight kills the joy. Grab the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary. It's light, fast, and saves cash. TL;DR: Go light or you're gonna regret it.
I went through this exact same spiral when I got my S5II and honestly, I am so satisfied that I stuck with the Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. for my travels. It works really well as a one-lens solution and fits perfectly under your budget if you find a good deal. Here is why I think it is the better call for Japan:
- The weight difference is massive. When you are hitting 20k steps a day, that Sigma starts feeling like a brick pretty fast.
- Having 105mm for architecture and street shots is a total game changer compared to stopping at 70mm.
- Honestly, the S5II handles high ISO so well that f/4 is not a problem for night shots. Just let the sensor do the heavy lifting.
- You can usually find this lens for around $800-$900 used, which saves you money for the actual trip. While the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art for L-Mount is amazing for portraits, for a do-it-all travel zoom, I have no complaints with the Lumix.
Big if true
