I just got a Lumix camera and i have to take photos of my sisters engagement party next saturday and i am totally panicking. The kit lens makes everything look kind of flat and boring and someone told me i need a prime lens for those blurry backgrounds but i dont even know what that really means or which one fits.
I only have about 400 dollars left after buying the camera so i need something cheap but good. Sorry if this is a dumb question i just dont want to mess up her big day and i am so lost. Which l-mount prime lens is actually the best value for doing portraits?
Been thinking about your budget and honestly, you absolutely must look at the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8! It is basically the king of value for L-mount portraits. I know it lists for slightly more sometimes, but you can frequently find deals or used copies right around that 400 dollar mark. The compression you get from an 85mm focal length makes faces look incredible, way better than any kit lens. If that stretches the wallet too much, the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 is another fantastic choice that fits comfortably in your budget. Technically, these f1.8 lenses are amazing because they let in so much light, which is gonna save you if the engagement party is indoors or in low light! Just keep that aperture wide open to get those beautiful blurry backgrounds youre after. Youre totally gonna kill it at the party!
Congrats on the new gear! I think getting a prime lens is an amazing idea for those engagement portraits. Im not 100% sure on the exact prices right now but IIRC there are some fantastic value options.
- Prioritize an 85mm focal length for portraits
- Choose a lens with a wide f1.8 aperture I love using primes because the background blur is just incredible! It really makes the subjects pop compared to a kit lens!
