Which L-mount prime is actually the sharpest for portraits? I've got a high-end fashion gig in London next Friday and my current glass just isnt sharp enough for the 47mp sensor on my SL2. I'm torn between the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art and the Lumix S Pro 50mm f1.4... I've heard the 50mm is legendary but the Sigma is newer and half the price. My budget is capped at $1600 ish so the Panasonic is a stretch but I'll do it if it's way better. Or maybe the Sigma 105mm f1.4 bokeh monster? I need to order tonight to get it in time so please help me decide.
To add to the point above: in my experience, chasing the priciest glass isnt always the best move. I've tried many setups over the years and found these gems punch way above their weight for high-res sensors:
- Sigma 65mm f2 DG DN Contemporary is scary sharp, basically a hidden macro.
- Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f1.8 is a total bargain and honestly holds its own for sharpness. Pocket that extra cash for your trip!
Honestly, Ive spent years chasing that perfect bit of glass for high-res sensors like your SL2, and if youre doing high-end fashion in London, the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art is the one to beat right now. I've tried many different setups over the years, and while the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 50mm f1.4 has that special rendering people call 'Leica-like,' the Sigma is just brutally sharp from corner to corner. On a 47mp sensor, you really notice when a lens starts to get soft, but the 85mm DG DN (make sure it's the DN version specifically for mirrorless) holds up perfectly even wide open at f1.4. The Sigma 105mm f1.4 DG HSM Art is a legend for sure, but ngl, its a heavy beast to lug around a set all day. In my experience, the weight becomes a real issue after a few hours of handheld shooting. The 85mm is much more balanced on the SL2 body. Also, I've found the contrast on the Sigma Art series to be exactly what fashion editors are looking for lately... really punchy and clean. Plus, it fits well under your $1600 cap, so no need to overextend for the Lumix which is basically double the price for marginal gains in sharpness. Grab the 85mm f1.4 Art, you wont regret it. Feel free to ask if you need tips on the AF settings for the SL2 with that lens too, since it can be a bit finicky when you're shooting at f1.4 in a fast-paced environment...
it might be worth looking at the technical data before you pull the trigger. since the sl2 sensor is so demanding, i usually check lab test results to see which glass actually resolves that much detail. i remember a really good breakdown of this on a couple of photography blogs a few weeks back.
- search for l-mount lens sharpness database online
- check youtube for sl2 specific lens tests
- find those side-by-side mtf chart comparisons basically, just go look at the charts. they show exactly how the resolution drops off toward the edges. you can probably find exactly what you need with a quick google search for l-mount prime reviews... better to trust the numbers than us anyway tho.
