So I'm looking at the 50mm f/1.8 for my D5600 but people say it's basically a 75mm on crop which seems way too tight for my tiny apartment studio. But then the 35mm apparently distorts faces? I've got $200 and a deadline for my sisters grad photos so I'm just spinning my wheels here.
I had this exact issue with my old D3300. I ended up getting the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G since my place was tiny. I've been super satisfied with it... as long as you arent doing super close headshots, the distortion isnt a big deal. For under $200, it's a total steal and worked great for my cousins grad photos last year.
> But then the 35mm apparently distorts faces? Quick reply while I have a sec... unfortunately the rumors are kinda true if you are trying to do tight headshots. I had issues with my Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G because you have to stand so close to fill the frame that it makes noses look way bigger. It was super disappointing for my last shoot tbh. If your apartment is really that tiny, you might be forced to use it, but try to keep some distance and crop the photo later. Perspective distortion is a real pain. Honestly, I'd still try to cram a used Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G in there if you can. Maybe shoot from the hallway through the door? lol. It sounds silly but the facial proportions will look way more natural than the 35mm for your sisters photos.
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
