What is the best all-around lens for a Nikon Z6?

So I finally pulled the trigger on a used Z6 body last week and I am freaking out because my flight to Kyoto is in exactly nine days and I still dont have a proper lens for it. I have been adapting my old F-mount glass with the FTZ but the autofocus is just too slow for travel and I dont want to carry that bulky adapter everywhere honestly. I need something that can just stay on the camera 90% of the time because my bag space is super limited since I am only doing carry-on for this whole three week trip.

I am currently stuck between two main choices and I cant make up my mind for the life of me.

  • The Z 24-70mm f/4 S: I can find this super cheap used right now, like under $400, which would leave me plenty of cash for food and activities while I am out there. It is small and light which is a huge plus for my back.
  • The Z 24-120mm f/4 S: Everyone says this is the ultimate travel lens but it costs way more, like over a thousand bucks, and it is definitely heavier and longer. Is that extra reach worth the extra weight when I am walking 20k steps a day through temples?

I was also looking at the 28-75mm f/2.8 because I love the idea of that low light capability for the night markets but I have heard mixed things about the sharpness compared to the S-line glass. I am mostly shooting street scenes, some landscapes, and definitely some close up food shots. If I go with the 24-70 I might have room in my budget for a tiny prime like the 40mm f/2 but I really dont want to be swapping lenses in the rain or crowded subways if I can avoid it.

What do you guys think is the move here? I need to order something by tomorrow night to make sure it gets to my house in Seattle before I head to the airport. Is the 24-120 really that much better for a one-lens setup or should I just save the money and go with the kit 24-70? I am so torn and the clock is ticking...

I've been using the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S and I am super satisfied with it for travel. That extra reach really works well when you're shooting temples in Kyoto and can't get close. Honestly, it's worth the extra weight to have everything in one lens. If you really need to save cash tho, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is still a great, light option.
