I just got a Nikon Z5 for my trip to Yellowstone next month and honestly I have no idea what I'm doing. The guy at the store sold me the camera but now I'm looking at lenses and there are so many numbers and it's making me really stressed out. I don't want to carry a giant bag of gear around the parks because I'm going with my kids and they're already a handful. I have about 800 dollars left to spend. Is there just one lens that can do everything? Like zooming in on animals but also taking pictures of the big scenery? Sorry if this is a stupid question I just dont want to buy the wrong thing and waste my money... what's the best one for a beginner who just wants one lens for everything?

Honestly, I was pretty let down by some of the cheaper options when I started. I thought I could get away with the basic kit lens but it was a total mistake because I could not zoom in at all. For a trip like Yellowstone, you really want the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR. It is basically the only lens you need for a trip with kids because you wont be fumbling with caps and bags every time you see a cool bird. Heres the breakdown of why this one is the safe bet:

  • It starts at 24mm which is what they call wide angle. Great for those huge mountain landscapes.
  • It goes up to 200mm which lets you zoom in on elk or bison from a safe distance.
  • It has built-in stabilization so your photos dont turn out blurry if you are moving around. I will be real tho, its not perfect. I was actually kinda disappointed with how it performed once the sun started setting. Since the f-number is high, it lets in less light, so evening photos can look a bit grainy or dark. I had some issues with that on my last trip and it was frustrating. But honestly, for your 800 dollar budget, its the most reliable choice. Just keep in mind that you wont be taking professional night sky photos with it. For everything else during the day, it beats carrying three different lenses that you will probably just end up dropping anyway...
