honestly so fed up with my 18-105mm kit lens its just not giving me that blurry background everyone wants for portraits and everything looks kind of flat and muddy honestly. im super anxious because i promised to do my sisters engagement photos in seattle next weekend and i dont want to let her down but my current gear is just failing me every time i try to practice.
i have about 500 bucks saved up and i need something sharp like right now. i keep hearing conflicting things about the 50mm and 85mm but i dont know which one is actually better for a d7500 crop sensor or if those are too zoomed in for outdoor shots. which prime lens is best for nikon dslr portrait photography?
^ This. Also, dont overlook the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G if youre worried about framing. In my experience, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G provides superior subject separation, which fixes that flat look youre hating. Ive tested both; the 50mm is technically sharper for headshots. Since they are both well under your 500 budget, the 50mm is honestly the superior choice for pure portraiture.
Just saw this. You gotta be careful with the 85mm on that D7500. Since it is a crop sensor, it basically becomes a 130mm lens which might be way too tight for busy Seattle streets. I would suggest the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G instead. It is way more versatile for your sensor size. Make sure to check your focus distance tho, dont get too close or youll get weird face distortion.
